Aeronautical Engineering lecturer at TU Delft: ‘Low risk of contamination in the aircraft’

Protocol at the beginning of this year
“At the beginning of this year, a corona protocol has already been announced in aviation. It is not the first time that the aviation industry has had to deal with a virus outbreak. The infamous SARS virus caused quite a bit of panic in 2003, especially in Asia. ”

The first place in that protocol is that if you belong to a vulnerable group, you should not fly. “It’s also important to check in online as much as possible and don’t queue up unnecessarily once you’re at the airport.”
The low point in the spring

The lowest point of the aviation corona crisis was March, April and May. “At that time we were at less than ten per cent flight capacity,” says Melkert. “Now we are about 50 per cent. I guess it will stay that way for a while. ”

CBS shows significant declines
Calculations by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) show that Aviation has indeed been hit hard by the corona measures.
“The turnover in the transport sector fell in the second quarter of 2020 by more than 21 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier. Almost all branches had to deal with sales declines. The transport of goods and people by air and aviation services have been hit hardest by the corona crisis. The postal and courier services were the only ones in the transport sector to achieve more turnover, “Statistics Netherlands reports based on recent quarterly figures.
