The Dutch have more and more smart home products at home. This is evident from figures from Multiscope. According to the research agency, there are 2.5 billion euros worth of smart devices in all Dutch households. The market for smart home products has thus grown by 47% in the past year. Last year we still had 1.7 billion euros worth of smart equipment at home.
Market for smart speakers has grown the most
In total, 3.3 million Dutch households own one or more smart products. Products from the categories ‘lighting and switches’ and ‘energy and heating’ are particularly common. The main reasons for people to purchase a smart product is cost savings, convenience and comfort. The smart speaker segment grew the fastest in the past year. In 2019, 19% of all respondents had a smart speaker in their home, in 2018 this share was only 6%. Smart doorbells are also popular. We previously announced that 6% of Dutch households (more than half a million) have a smart doorbell. This means that the share of smart doorbells has doubled in two years. By purchasing smart home products, the contents are worth a lot more. It is therefore wise to take out good home contents and home insurance. These insurance policies cover, for example, damage due to burglary and theft.
Privacy and smart homes
Smart products at home are of course very useful. Unfortunately, there are also a number of privacy risks. A previous study by Motivaction showed that 68% of the Dutch fear that home automation equipment falls into the wrong hands. About 75% of the respondents are afraid of being hacked. At the end of 2017, the news came out that the Google Home Mini was constantly listening to everything that was said. It is therefore not surprising that 65% of the Dutch do not want to operate all devices by voice. Only 18% completely trust smart devices.
Best smart home products
Finally, we would like to tell you what the best smart home products are right now. In the smart doorbell category, the Ring Video Doorbell 2 gets a lot of good reviews. This is a compact video doorbell with WiFi, where you can see who is at the door via the app on the smartphone. Thanks to the infrared LED lamps, residents also have a good view at night. In addition, many people are also enthusiastic about the Google Nest Mini. This is an assistant that is available to users 24/7. The Nest Mini can work with hundreds of smart devices, such as lights, thermostats and smart plugs. He is already on the coffee table for a few tens. We also see the smart thermostat in more and more households. The Nest Thermostat E consists of several energy-saving functions. The operation of this device is simple. For example, people can adjust the temperature via the device itself, but also via the Nest app or Google Assistant.
